The faces of hunger

Why are so many people hungry? Hunger is an income problem.

  • Most adults who face hunger are unemployed and looking for work, underemployed, retired or disabled.
  • Agencies continue to see many new faces; people who never thought they would need help who are seeking emergency food for the first time in their lives.
  • 36 percent of those eating meals from emergency food boxes are children.
  • Children who are hungry have more trouble learning in school. In addition, early childhood hunger and malnutrition can lead to irreversible health problems later in life.
