Today, the House of Representatives failed to pass the Supporting America’s Charities Act—a bill that included two provisions that would have benefited food banks across the country and the 49 million people we serve. The bill would have incentivized the donation of food and funds.

Some late-breaking news makes us believe that the House and Senate may vote very soon on the Supporting America's Charities Act – a bill that includes the food donation tax deduction. The bill would have a significant impact on our ability to secure more food, particularly fresh produce.
We appreciate that many of you have made calls to your members of Congress over the last month to support the food donation tax deduction, and we need your support again for another push to get this important provision over the finish line.

“As soon as the recession hit, I was homeless. I was trying to find a job, a place, but nothing worked out and I just got caught up in the homeless cycle,” said Chris, a regular visitor to The Underground at Clay Street Table. Every week, The Underground provides community, meals and support to youth and young adults struggling with homelessness.
Clay Street Table is one of hundreds of partner agencies supported through your donations to Oregon Food Bank. Each week, they feed people living in downtown Portland and struggling with hunger. Hundreds of pounds of fresh, frozen and canned goods are distributed through their pantry and meal programs.

“I went to my doctor and he told me I am pre-diabetic and that I needed to eat healthier and lose weight,” said Dawn, a local nutrition education graduate. “My husband and I used to eat out a lot but since he’s the only one working right now, we need to save money.”
Volunteers who teach nutrition education courses at Oregon Food Bank say many of the participants face similar issues. Nutrition education classes meet once a week for six weeks and are designed to challenge food preferences and habits. Along with cooking methods, nutrition, and food safety, students take a tour of a local grocery store where they learn practical shopping and meal planning. These skills combined increase food security and quality of life.

New Seasons Market
New Seasons Market (NSM) is OFB’s December Corporate Donor of the Month! Thank you NSM for celebrating our community.
NSM customers are a generous bunch of shoppers. Through the “passive” register fund drives, NSM stores donated funds which allowed OFB to purchase and distribute over 63,000 meals.

Jerry Tippens Advocacy Award - Commissioner Dan Saltzman
Commissioner Dan Saltzman has gone above and beyond to help Portland families put enough food on their tables. In 2013, he proposed adding hunger as a critical issue in the Portland Children’s Levy. He successfully campaigned for the inclusion and as a result, more than $2.6 million will be invested in anti-hunger programs in Portland over the next three years. In addition, Commissioner Saltzman has raised awareness among his colleagues by spearheading two food repack shifts in the last year for City of Portland employees. His leadership and advocacy for Portland families experiencing food insecurity make him a true anti-hunger hero.

Partnership is about synergistic, collaborative efforts. Fred Meyer Stores engages everyone. From their leadership team and their employees to their vendors and customers, they help the community focus on alleviating hunger in Oregon and Clark County, Washington. Their thoughtful and strategic leadership encourages innovation and teamwork throughout the OFB Network and their stores. Fred Meyer is willing to try new methods to end hunger, even if the results are not immediate.

Jackie Fearing Volunteer Award – Jeri & Tricia Dobbs
For 12 years, Jeri and Tricia Dobbs have inventoried, stocked and packed bins of equipment and supplies for our Nutrition Education Program’s off-site classes. They have given hundreds of hours to making sure course participants and volunteer educators have everything needed. Additionally, Jeri and Tricia helped set-up the Kaiser Permanente Teaching Kitchen at Oregon Food Bank’s Beaverton location. Their knowledge of the Nutrition Education Program was useful in helping create a kitchen environment that best supports class participants, Master Gardeners and volunteers using the space.

Now that the election is over, Congress will return to Washington today to finish its remaining business. We expect that extending several expiring tax provisions will be a high priority for Congress and it’s our goal to ensure that the food donation tax deduction is included.
