On July 4, Congress passed H.R. 1, the federal budget bill which includes deep cuts to SNAP (formerly known as food stamps) totaling $186 billion, the largest reduction in the program’s history. These cuts would take away food, health coverage and other essential supports from families to fund tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy, increase funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and boost military spending.
Hunger is already a crisis in Oregon. One in eight people face food insecurity including one in six children. Last year, Oregon Food Bank’s network of more than 1,200 community-based partners saw a 31% increase in demand with 2.5 million visits to food assistance sites statewide. These proposed SNAP cuts would make an already challenging situation even harder. An estimated one million children nationwide could lose access to food assistance and thousands of Oregonians who are already struggling to get by would face even greater hardship.
Use our digital tool to contact your U.S. Senators and Representative. Urge them to reverse these harmful cuts in H.R. 1 and work to strengthen SNAP so that everyone in Oregon and across the country has access to the food we all need to thrive.
